Historical Significance of Lakhan Thapa Magar

Lakhan Thapa Magar (1862-1877 AD) is Nepal's first martyr who raised his voice against the Rana regime. He was a local leader from Bungkot, Gorkha, who rebelled against the authority of Jung Bahadur Rana and the Rana regime.

In 1877 AD, he and his companions were arrested on charges of rebellion. The Rana regime then hanged him in Basantapur. The Government of Nepal officially declared him the "First Martyr of Nepal" in 1999 AD.
